About

nuance.lab is Jason Yee’s research identity, based in Utrecht. The work sits at the meeting of rhythmic practice, cultural life, and how bodies share attention — asking how people move together, and what that shared motion makes possible.

The logo’s quiet dissolve reveals Dutch nu ons lab — “now our lab” — a small reminder that the work belongs to the room it happens in.

A working concept

Epoché

From phenomenology (Husserl): not doubting the world, but suspending a dogmatic attitude toward it — the everyday habit of taking our usual take on reality for granted. The aim is to neutralize that naivety long enough to notice how things are given, and from whose perspective.

At nuance.lab we use epoché as a way to broach the problems, projects, and concepts we care about: holding judgment so difference can be met without drowning it out; making room for rhythmic and embodied knowing alongside word-heavy social life; designing commons where people can try moving together before declaring what it all means.

A working idea

Latent capacity, scaffolded

Picture someone raised without speech. They get through life fluently in movement, touch and gesture. Then one day, as an adult, they see a group of people sitting still, barely moving anything but their mouths, and clearly having a wonderful time. They want in. They try, and nothing comes out. Should they give up on talking? Of course not. Their brain is already prepared for spoken language; what’s missing is time in an environment built for learning it.

Many adults who say “I don’t dance” are in the mirror-image situation. The capacity to speak with the body is part of our shared inheritance, much like the capacity for vocal learning. But a life run almost entirely on verbal exchange leaves that capacity largely unpracticed, and brains strengthen what they use.

The point is not that everyone can already dance, or that anyone who can’t is failing. It’s that this capacity is latent rather than absent, and it grows with practice in a well-scaffolded setting. Such a setting has a shared pulse, low stakes, and room to be awkward, because awkwardness is simply what the early stages of any new language feel like.

Bodies and sensory worlds differ, so what that practice looks like will differ too.
